Spreading the word about water

Wall mural: Michaux is working with Charleston County School of the Arts to create an exterior wall mural depicting the Noisette Creek Preserve. The mural will promote the importance of healthy waterways in our urban watershed. The Ashley Cooper Stormwater Education Consortium (ASCSEC) and the North Charleston Cultural Arts Department have provided funding for this project.

Stormdrain marking: To minimize the pollution entering our creeks and rivers, Michaux has become a regional coordinator for the ASCESC stormdrain marking program. In addition to marking stormdrains in the Ladson Exchange Park, Michaux is working with Horizon Village to mark their development. Polluted runoff is one of the greatest threats to our creeks and rivers.

Urban MiniFarm: As a jumpstart to our proposed MiniFarm project, we have planted an organic community garden with help from Metanoia's after-school program. The garden will provide a variety of fresh vegetables while teaching the importance of healthy foods and healthy waterways. Metanoia students will develop a business plan. Based upon this business plan, they may distribute produce to the community through a student-run farm stand.

Restoring our creek and green space

Mitigation project: Thanks to our combined efforts, restoration of a 12-acre area within the Noisette Creek Preserve is scheduled to begin this year.

Cleanups: By conducting regular cleanups, we have removed extensive amounts of accumulated trash and debris from the Noisette Creek Preserve and from nearby neighborhoods. This activity also serves to increase environmental awareness within our community.

Monitoring: To improve water quality in Noisette Creek, we are creating a volunteer water-quality monitoring network in collaboration with Ashley Cooper Stormwater Education Consortium.

Plant and tree survey: Michaux has surveyed 75 acres of native and invasive plants and trees at Noisette Creek. The South Carolina Forestry Commission funded this project. The funding also enabled us to create educational materials for North Charleston Schools and for the public.
